Yasmin is an oral contraceptive used to prevent ovulation. Also known as Yaz, it has been on the market in the United States since 2001 and prescribed to millions of women. Recently, major side effects have been made public and call into question the safety of this drug. Many of these cardiovascular problems have been linked to women that are overweight, smokers, or have a history of heart problems in their family but have also been seen in women with no risk factors. Though the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) has required the manufacturer, Bayer Healthcare, to issue warnings due to misleading television commercials, the medication is still on the market despite the cardiovascular issues the taking the drug may present.

Side effects to watch for include:
• Sudden weight gain when no other lifestyle changes are made
• High blood pressure, or hypertension, that was not previously present
• Chest pains or tightness in the chest
• High cholesterol due to atherosclerosis which has caused angina
• Stroke due to blocked arteries from high blood pressure
• Heart attacks of any kind, whether mild or severe
• Death of a family member who had used Yasmin in the past

If you experience any of these side effects or have a family member whose death you suspect was related to Yasmin use, stop taking Yasmin and immediately consult your doctor. The consequences of using Yasmin should also be discussed with an attorney that specializes in medical personal injury cases who can explain your rights.
